It was raining. I was broken. Everything in me had gone silent, except for the part that had made a decision: this was it.
I was walking toward the bridge.
I had no plan to talk to anyone. I didn’t want to be stopped. But the bus pulled up beside me — and the driver looked me in the eye and said:
“You don’t have to do this.”
No one knew what I was carrying. But he felt it. Or saw it. Or maybe he’d been there, too.
I didn’t respond. I just stood there. The bus pulled away.
And I didn’t keep walking.
I’m not here to tell you the next day was easy. It wasn’t. But it existed. And so did the next. And eventually, light came back.
I never got to thank him. I doubt he even knows. But he gave me a second chance — with one sentence.
